Taking the First Steps to Fitness
Last month, the NHS published its latest obesity data: around 26% of British adults are currently classified as obese. The consequences are difficult to manage whatever your age and life stage; whether it’s missing out on swimming with the kids or feeling isolated and prone to health problems in old age. So, whether you are overweight and aiming to get in shape, or simply keen to stay youthful and healthy for as long as possible, now’s a great time to get started on your fitness journey here at the Riviera Centre and beyond.
Choose your challenge
Begin by deciding on your goals. They don’t have to be purely about weight loss. Perhaps you want to feel more confident in those skinny jeans, or walk the grandkids to school without being out of breath. Talk to a fitness professional - Lifestyle’s gym has plenty - and identify your targets. There are government guidelines for exercise which may also be helpful. Grab some comfy clothes, update your playlist, and think about activities which you enjoy. Numerous studies have shown the importance of regular exercise and good nutrition; both of which are easier to achieve when you can make them enjoyable.
Get active
Most health professionals will recommend a balance between cardiovascular exercise, which gets the heart rate up and burns calories, and strength training. You can start gently with cardiovascular activities such as walking and swimming, and build up to running, aerobics or cycling as you wish. You might also prefer team games such as squash, tennis or netball. Strength training is sometimes avoided for fear of bulking up, but it’s hugely effective for both men and women in becoming leaner, more toned and improving bone density, so it’s well worth including in your programme.
Feed your body well
To accompany your new fitness routine, your body will need plenty of energy. The British Nutrition Foundation has published an Eatwell Guide to help you balance your calorie intake whilst still getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs. It’s also important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and replace fluid lost through sweating. Your whole body will benefit from top to toe if you’re drinking enough water.
Finally, find ways to share your fitness experience, whether that’s taking walks in your lunch break with a colleague or a gentle family bike ride at weekends. Research has shown that exercising with a friend can make you happier and more motivated, so find someone to share the journey with if possible. Don’t forget to take note of every small success along the way, both on and off the scales. The path to getting in shape can be as simple as choosing a goal, finding an exercise you enjoy, and celebrating your wins along the way. Go get ‘em!
