Girls Guides Celebrate Centenary Year

On 20th October 2010 at 20:10pm, Girl Guides across the Country celebrated 100 years of Girl guiding by renewing their promise.

Members from the Devon region who are part of the Devon Trefoil Guild, commemorated the occasion at the Riviera International Centre with a celebratory Lunch followed by a renewal of their promise.

The Trefoil Guild is an organisation formed to provide practical, moral and financial support to Guiding and Scouting. Their aim is to keep the spirit of the Guide/Scout Promise and Law alive among Members and carry that spirit into the communities in which members live and work.

In Devon there are nearly 10,000 Girl Guides and Scouts making them part of one of the world's largest organisation for girls and women.

The centenary celebrations began on 5th September 2009 with various launch parties that took place around the country. Since then many National events have taken place including a week long camping trip in August, a region based thinking day festival and a Flower Show in July.

The last activity on the Devon Trefoil diary was the Centenary Camp at Woodlands where Guides from across Devon joined in and many Trefoil members assisted with the activities. "Supporting and equipping Guides with practical skills to utilise in modern day life is one of the fundamental ambitions of the Trefoil Guild, said Liz Norsworthy, a former County Secretary of Devon Trefoil Guild who organised the celebratory lunch. She continued; “Connotations of what is considered to be ‘modern life’ may have changed quite considerably over the past 100 years, however the key principles of personal development and commitment to helping others will always remain the same."
