Comic array at first Torbay Fringe

TORQUAY is in for a huge summer boost as some of the country's top comedians, music acts and dancers head to the resort for a first ever Riviera Fringe Festival.

The week-long programme is packed with culture, drama, family shows, magic, street theatre, acrobats, jugglers, art exhibitions and historical pageants.

The event, which is the brain-child of Torbay-based Trevor George Entertainment Ltd, runs from July 5 to 12 and has the backing of Torbay Council, Brixham Chamber of Commerce, Torbay Town Centres company and the Riviera International Conference Centre.

Exact details of the event are still being kept under wraps, but organisers have revealed award-winning comedian Milton Jones will be performing.

"It turns out the Torquay Fringe is going to be far funnier than the old man's haircut I thought it was," said Milton.

"I'm looking forward to surfing the waves of laughter."

The regular on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo will be joined by well known Canadian comic Craig Campbell, who has toured with Al Murray and Frankie Boyle.

Comedy circuit regular Danny Posthill, who is known for his one liners and topical impressions, is also performing along with established comic Paul Eastwood who has performed on cruise ships.

Visual comedian Steve Rawlings, who has been on the bill for the Royal Variety Performance, has also been added to the line up.

Kev Orkian will also be performing. The pianist, singer and actor has entertained numerous members of the Royal Family, including performing at Prince Philip's 89th birthday celebrations.

There will also be a dance festival and an event for fringe goers who are into health and therapies.

Youngsters are also being catered for in a pirate show, the Adventure of the High Seas, as well as magic workshops with Marvin's Magic School and a wrestling show.

Street artists will also be performing in the town centre.

Ferry boats are also involved with the launch of the festival — with each decorated and themed.

"It will be a massive boost for Torbay with everyone involved working together key to the festival's success," said Anne George, of Trevor George Entertainment Ltd.

"There are over 50 individual shows planned and more in the melting pot, with plenty of opportunity for locals to get involved.

"Hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions will all benefit from the festival as it will bring people to the Bay."
